Phoenix Backpackers is one of the oldest remaining houses in Jeffrey's Bay. It was built in the 1870's by Englishman George Pell and used to be known as the Phoenix Hotel, General Store and Fishery.

After many years the Phoenix has been resurrected, opening in 2006 as Phoenix Backpackers.

With its spacious rooms, ample parking and verandahs, the house has the perfect design for a backpackers.

It is also conveniently situated in a largely commercialised area close to all the amenities a visitor may need.

Ultimately, backpackers who stay at the Phoenix will leave with memories of more than just Jeffrey's Bay's sun, sand and surf.

They will also have glimpsed the past and have gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of the area and its people.

Jeffreys Bay is a surfers’ paradise. With numerous surf shops and surf schools there is no excuse for not getting into the waves. Sand boarding is also a big attraction for sport lovers.
The town has all the shops and facilities needed for a perfect holiday. Jeffreys Bay has all of the following: supermarkets, doctors, pharmacies, dentists, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, a hotel, B&B’s, movie theater and a school.

Special events in town are the Billabong Pro WCT Surfing contest, (12-22 July) attracting the world's top surfers to take on Supertubes and compete for R2000,000 prizemoney. In September Jeffreys Bay plays host to the Shell Festival, with live music and large market areas for the family to enjoy.

This area is the soul of surfing in South Africa. A land of aloes, dolphins, perfect points and classic reefs. The area around Cape St Francis, Jeffreys Bay and Port Elizabeth is part of the Eastern Cape. However, it's totally unique. The quality of the waves makes it worthy of a special mention. Flanked by mountains to the northwest and the ocean to the southeast, this coastline is the transition between the southern Cape and the eastern Cape. The coast is beginning to curve towards the northeast, rather than travelling due east.

The landscape is flat and dryish between the sea and the mountains. Vegetation is characterised by aloes, fleshy sour figs (good for jellyfish stings), Cape fynbos and shrubland. Distant views of steely blue mountains and the vast bays that characterise Jeffreys Bay and Algoa Bay, make for beautiful landscapes. A glassy afternoon at Supers can be a divine experience, especially when the dolphins make their appearance, darting in and out of the waves right next to you; showing us what true soul surfing is all about.

Jeffreys Bay is the ideal base from which to explore the untouched Baviaanskloof Wilderness area, Tsitsikamma, the Langkloof and Gamtoos Valleys of the Kouga.

Jeffreys Bay hosts the Kabeljauws Nature Reserve which offers a 4 km hiking trial and offers ideal opportunities for spotting water birds. For a great Cape Town Backpackers check out African Heart. Nature lovers can also enjoy the Noorsekloof Nature Reserve and experience the magnificent fragrances of indigenous fynbos whilst a stroll through the Seekoei Nature Reserve includes a visit to the Penquin Rehabilitation Centre and a variety of small mammals.

Just outside of Jeffrey's is a beautiful Kloof and waterfall, equipped with a 'foofy-slide' for those wanting to get the adrenalin going.

No trip to the area would be complete without a visit to some of the nearby Animal Parks and Sanctuaries. Most popular is the Seaview Lion Park, where for a nominal fee you are allowed to spend some time and play with the newest litter of Lion cubs! Close by is also Kragga Kamma Game Park with giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and an array of other african beasts.

An hour's drive west will bring you to Nature's Valley and home to three excellent animal sanctuaries. Monkeyland is teeming with indiginous apes from around the country, walking freely in this massive protected area of Tsitsikamma rain forest. Next door is Birds of Eden where a pleasant walk takes one through a variety of climates and amazing varieties of local birds. And next to that is the Elephant Sanctuary where you have the opportunity to walk with, and feed by hand fully-grown African Elephants!
